MICADO and the Extremely Large Telescope - overview, current status, science and synergies

On the occasion of the launch of a Max Planck partner group led by Prof. Jinyi Shangguan and the inauguration of the bi-lateral collaboration between KIAA and MPE
I will give an overview of Europe's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and its designated first light camera MICADO, which, together, will form the biggest eye on the sky by the end of this decade.
I will summarize design, status, and capabilities and give an outline of the science cases an synergies with other telescopes and instruments, with special emphasis on those cases where KIAA and MPE have a common interest.

Biography:
Eckhard Sturm – short info -Initially wanted to become a professional cellist. But finally chose physics -PhD in 1995 with Prof. Rolf Kudritzki at the LMU/Institute for Astronomy, Munich (Disentangling of composite spectra, studies of stellar atmospheres with binaries) -Joined MPE in 1995 as support astronomer for the German ISO-SWS data centre (ISO was ESA’s Infrared Space Observatory in the 1990s, SWS was the on-board Short Wavelength Spectrometer, built partly at MPE) -1998: 1 year at Caltech (Pasadena) as temporary staff scientist -Since 1999 back at MPE -Was: Manager of the PACS Instrument Control Center for ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory, then became Project Manager of PACS, and finally PI of PACS (succeeding Albrecht Poglitsch); and Project Manager of GRAVITY (ESO/VLTI) and ERIS (ESO(VLT) -Is: Senior Scientist and Project Leader at MPE (IR Group), Project Manager of MICADO (the first light imager for the ELT) -Science concentrates on AGNs, from the innermost scales (structure and kinematics of the central parsecs) to larger scales (outflows and feedback), mostly in the infrared and (sub-)mm. I have worked a lot on mid- and far-Infrared diagnostics. I was PI of the HERSCHEL guaranteed time key project SHINING (see https://www.mpe.mpg.de/ir/SHINING), and PI of the (open time) ESO VLTI Large Programme “The Core of the Matter” (AGN with GRAVITY) see the ADS library at https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/user/libraries/lBrTmqOXSa6TUYaq2ulbQQ
