Announcing the 2016 KIAA-PKU Astrophysics Forum


The 2016 KIAA-PKU Astrophysics Forum:

 Future Large Optical-Infrared Facilities in China

Astronomy is an empirical science driven by progress in observational facilities.  With the rapid development of telescopes facilities on the ground and in space during the past decade, coupled with increased participation in large international projects such as TMT and SKA, China is poised to play a dominant role in astronomy on the world stage.  A major current weakness, however, is the lack of general-purpose, large-aperture optical-infrared facilities.  To remedy this urgent situation, the community, under the auspices of the National Astronomical Observatory of China, has proposed the construction of a 12-meter optical-infrared telescope in Ali, Tibet.  In a parallel effort, a consortium of universities is evaluating the feasibility of developing a 6.5-meter optical-infrared telescope.

 

The theme for this year's KIAA-PKU Astrophysics Forum is Future Large Optical-Infrared Facilities in China. We are organizing a forum to discuss the two proposed large telescope projects.  It is a great opportunity for EVERYONE in the Chinese astronomy community to actively participate in the early planning of the two projects, to join in various science and technique working groups, and to learn, propose, and discuss science cases for the two telescopes. The forum will provide a platform for national and international collaborations among individuals and institutions.

 

Topics to be covered in the workshop include:

• Key science drivers

• Key technical specifications of the telescopes

• Instrumentation requirements

• Site survey

• International collaboration

• Detailed planning for the 12-meter telescope project

中国未来大型光学-红外天文设备

天文学是一门以观测设备发展为驱动的实验科学。在过去的十年里,地基和空间望远镜飞速发展,中国也日益增多地参与诸如TMT和SKA等大型国际合作项目。所以中国有望在世界天文舞台发挥主导作用。但中国缺乏大口径通用光学-红外望远镜,使天文的发展受到严重局限。为解决这个燃眉之急,中国天文界在国家天文台的主持下计划在西藏阿里建造12米光学-红外望远镜。同时,数个天文院校也在联合起来评估建造一个6.5米光学-红外望远镜的可行性。

 

本年度北京大学科维理天体物理论坛的主题为“中国未来大型光学-红外天文设备”。我们将组织讨论两个计划中的大型望远镜项目, 是每位中国天文界人士积极参与项目初期策划,加入各个科学技术工作组以及了解、提议、讨论科学案例的一个好机会。论坛也将为个人及单位间提供国内外合作的平台。会议将包括以下主题:
